Does Carrigeen Moss/ Irish Moss work for coughs?

Preparing Carrigeen Moss Tonic for coughs

My go to for coughs and colds

Is there an old-fashioned remedy that actually works for coughs? Get the real scoop on using carrigeen moss to help soothe a sore throat and reduce coughing.

If you’re looking for an all-natural remedy for your cough, Irish moss might be the answer you’ve been looking for. This sea vegetable, also known as carrageenan, has been used in traditional folk medicine for centuries. It’s known for its anti-inflammatory and expectorant properties, which can help reduce the symptoms of a cough. Irish moss contains a range of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, including vitamins A, E and K. These nutrients can help boost your immune system and fight off infections. It’s also high in iodine, which can help reduce the production of mucus and soothe your throat. To make use of Irish moss for your cough, you can either make a tea or a syrup. To make a tea, simply steep a teaspoon of Irish moss in hot water for 10 minutes, strain and drink.

The syrup is my personal favourite and will keep you going for a week or so. This is our family recipe that’s a go to at any hint of a cough. My babies love it too especially with the addition of honey at the end.

Carrigeen - A good handful

3-4 Organic Lemons

3-4 Organic Oranges

2 teaspoons of cloves

Bring all of this to the boil in 2-3 litres of water and simmer for at least an hour. You can strain it at this point before pouring into a sterilised jar leaving it to cool before putting it into the fridge. Now you have a wonder cough remedy that’s easy to use, just add a couple of tablespoons to hot water with raw honey to taste a few times a days but especially before going to bed. This should keep in the fridge for a week.

In conclusion, carrigeen moss is an amazing natural remedy to many health issues and should be considered a vital part of any health regime. It is especially beneficial for those with recurrent respiratory ailments, as it has been found to clear the lungs and reduce irritation in the airways caused by illnesses such as colds and coughs. While we don’t produce Carrigeen Moss ourselves it can be bought in capsule or powder form, making it incredibly easy to add to any diet. Additionally, due to its antibacterial and antifungal qualities, it can be used externally as well as internally for healing purposes. While more research needs to be done on the medicinal properties of this moss the use of this as a remedy for centuries as well as my own experience has me convinced of it’s potential to improve many aspects of our overall health. We should all make an effort to include this powerful healer into our daily lives!
